MONTANA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD HISTORY

The Montana Army National Guard has a rich and proud heritage serving the citizens of this state. Formed in 1885, the First Montana Infantry Regiment was formally organized in 1887 and the first company was located in Virginia City. The silk banner commissioned in 1895 to represent the First Montana Infantry-the Kessler Banner-was later adopted as the Montana state flag.

Montana Guard units have served in the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. Montana Guardsmen earned distinct recognition during WW II. The 163rd Infantry Regiment spearheaded the Allied Forces counter-offensive on New Guinea against the Japanese enemy, which proved to be a turning point in the war.

Although the Montana Army National Guard has assisted in many wars throughout the world, our primary goal is protecting and serving the citizens of Montana. Whenever a natural disaster occurs, National Guardsmen will always be there helping local communities and assisting wherever needed.
